Showcase Review: Apprentice Artists Highlight Their Talents

Storybook Dance rehearses

Yoga kicked off this semester's Showcase. Through a series of poses, such as downward dog and warrior pose, the audience got a glimpse into the yoga class routine. Next, Equilibrium Theater Company (ETC) debuted their original play, Starfinder. The short play featured scientists, aliens and a group of concerned citizens who all learn to get along. The performance was enhanced by amazing costumes and props made by N. 4th's visual artists. Folk Music treated the audience to renditions of If I Had a Hammer, Crazy and Danny Boy. Finally, Zumba took the stage with several energetic routines and even encouraged the audience to dance along.

Friday's Showcase included an original song parody by Comedy Club, follwed up by the hilarious Job Or No Job, created by Game Show Class and hosted by Jingle McChristmasTree aka Margaret. Contestants played rounds of Name that Job, Dress for Success and a final interview round. The winner was VSA's very own Apprentice Artist, Peter. The last performance of the day was an offering by Buen Viaje Dance Company (BVD) that included two new dances. The first B Text, featured colorful outfits and hula hoops, and commented on today's overuse of cellphones and other modern distractions. The second dance, Human Steps, used shapes and levels to bring the dancers together.

On Monday, Chorus started off the show with three Disney Songs: "Part of Your World" from The Little Mermaid, "He Lives in You" from Lion King, the Broadway Musical and "Belle," the opening song from Beauty and the Beast. Next up was a medley of cultural dances from Germany, India and Tanzania performed by Dances Around the World, Acting class showed off an original monologue, and highlighted Shakespearian monologues by two students: Adam read the part of Friar Laurence from Romeo and Juliet and Sunnie performed the death speech of Cleopatra from Antony and Cleopatra. The last performance of the day was an amazing creation by the Storybook Dance Project, featuring Evil Cinderella, lovers Captain Hook and Ariel and the benevolent queen, Maleficient.

Tuesday, the final day of Showcase, started off with two songs by Guitar Class: "Run Through the Jungle" and "With or Without You," and featuring the vocal stylings of Drake. Sign Language class presented an ASL interpretation of Madonna's "Holiday." The final Showcase performance was Hip Hop's routine to "The Whole World" by Outkast and had everyone tapping their feet. All in all it was a great show and fun was had by all.
