Some of Our Favorite Warm Ups

At VSA we don't just start creating art without warming up first. We have a dedicated Warm Up time every morning. Some of our favorite exercises to do during Warm Up include: Karaoke, Yoga, Who Am I?, Twenty Questions and Guitar-Off. We play these games and do exercises to loosen up our bodies, minds and creative muscles so that we are prepared to be the best artists we can be.

But we don't just warm up during Warm Up. We also warm up during class time. In visual arts classes, we might all draw a certain image from our imagination before we learn specific techniques. In music classes we do scales and drills to get our instruments ready. In theater classes we might work on breathing techniques, play improv games or recite the Actor's Toolbox: "Body, Voice (lalalala), Imagination, Concentration, Cooperation, Listening, Self Control, Self Control, Self Control!" In dance classes we stretch, investigate levels (high, medium and low), and work on our focus as a company in BVD.

Being an artist means that we can't just jump in right away. We have to take our time, focus, think and use our imagination, and at VSA warming up is a big part of being a good artist!
