Our Field Trip to New Mexico PBS (KNME)

Recently we had the opportunity to visit New Mexico's PBS station, KNME, which has been around since May 1, 1958 and it is still housed in the same building. KNME reaches all of New Mexico, serving 300,000 households, millions of New Mexicans, and in some areas it is the only station available. Guiding our tour was Bill Pinell, along with videographer Bob McDermid. We saw the studio, in which programs like New Mexico in Focus are filmed, as well as the booth, where shows are edited and descriptive video and closed captioning are added.

On our tour we learned about the different cameras and lights in the studio, the types of programming produced in New Mexico, such documentaries, and the three steps of production. The first step is to plan the production, including researching content, assembling a crew, writing a script, building a set (or scouting for a location), hiring the cast and much more. The second step is to shoot or record the program. The third, and final step is post production, including editing, reshoots and adding graphics.

We would like to extend thanks to KNME for hosting us and for providing important programming to all of New Mexico.
