How-To: Planning an Awesome Birthday Party

With so many of our Artist Reporters having birthdays recently, we thought we'd write a how-to about throwing a great party! The first thing you need is a guest list. Think of the friends and family you want to invite, just don't invite your enemies (they probably wouldn't want to come anyway)! You may want to think of a theme for your party, like smiley faces, a pizza party, barbies or bowling. Next you'll need a place to host your party, such as in your home, at a pool or a bowling alley or your local park. Figure out a time for your party. Many parties are on the weekend. Next pick out some invitations, and if you decided on a theme, they should probably match that theme. Once you've filled out your invitations, hand them out or mail them (and don't forget your stamps!).

The next step is to plan entertainment, decorations and food. If you have a theme, decorations are easy, but some basic party supplies are balloons, noise makers, streamers, party hats, favors and favor bags, and a happy birthday banner. Some favor ideas are candy, bubble gum, pencils or crayons, coloring books, small plastic toys, bubbles or a deck of cards. Finger foods are a great option for parties, like chips and salsa, cheese and crackers, mini quiches and fruit. If your party is at a meal time, then you need to serve a meal. Pizza, frito pie, hot dogs and hamburgers are all easy options. For dessert, cake is always a favorite, but cupcakes, ice cream and cookies work, too. Make sure you check with your guests for any dietary restrictions, so you have something for everyone. Don't forget about paper plates, napkins, cups, plastic utensils and straws! For entertainment you can have games, such as pin the tale on the donkey, water balloon fights, a treasure hunt or beanbag toss. Coming up with a good playlist is always a good idea, or you could even hire a band.

The last step in planning an awesome party is to remember to have fun!
