Season of Giving

In this season of giving, VSA North Fourth Art Center is grateful for the outpouring of community support and donations after our facility was robbed over Thanksgiving weekend. The thieves stole thousands of dollars worth of musical equipment, including twenty guitars, several amps, and more. Staff arrived after the holiday to discover the break-in of their art center at N. 4th Street near Griegos.

The center provides opportunities for people with disabilities to create art. "When people rob us," one student said, "they rob the community of learning what people with disabilities can do."

The staff and students were shocked, but they weren't down for long. Donations started coming in right away, especially after the story was featured on a local newscast. Students love the music program, and were happy to know that it would keep going. The art center would also like to extend a huge thanks to speech therapist Nancy Peterson for getting the online campaign started. In the spirit of giving and generosity afforded to VSA by its community, we're inspired to share a few of our favorite charitable organizations, if you feel so inclined to donate:

We like this organization because it fights for the civil liberties of all people and combats discrimination.

We like this organization because they fight, like the ACLU, for human rights of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and actively supports their full inclusion and participation in the community throughout their lifetimes.

We like this organization - which many of us have visited - because this organization assists individuals with developmental disabilities to achieve goals by structuring a positive, purposeful and caring environment for living, learning, and working in the community.

We like this organization because it promotes positive self identity and resilience through art making by providing a safe environment for creative social interaction with an emphasis to enhance the lives of those most marginalized in our community.

And last, but not least...

Our own Tonya Rivera is striving to make parks accessible for all people. Find out more through KRQE's local coverage of her story and mission: http://bit.ly/2h7db2P
